Transportation
Getting to La Foce is an exciting part of your Tuscan adventure! Whether you’re flying into one of the nearby airports, taking a scenic train ride, or driving through the countryside, there are plenty of options to suit your travel preferences. We’ve outlined key details below to help you plan your journey. Safe travels, and we can’t wait to welcome you!
Recommended Airports
When planning your journey to the La Foce area, the following airports offer convenient options depending on your location and travel preferences:
Florence – Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR)
Located northwest of La Foce, Florence Airport is approximately a 1 hour and 50 minute drive (93 miles / 150 km, Link: directions).
Rome – Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (FCO)
Rome’s main airport is located southeast of La Foce. The drive to La Foce takes around 2 hours 20 minutes (125 miles / 200 km, Link: directions).
Florence Airport (FLR) is closer to La Foce. However, Rome Airport (FCO) has a wider range of options. Both have many car rental choices.
Also please note that 2025 is a Jubilee Year in Italy. See the FAQ page for more information.
Car Rental
Due to the remote location of La Foce, we highly recommend renting a car at the airport where you arrive (Link: Car Rental Options). This will not only provide the easiest mode of transport to reach La Foce, but also offer flexibility for exploring throughout the weekend. The rolling hills, charming villages, and vineyards are best enjoyed at your own pace by car.
If you’re arriving by train to the La Foce area (Chiusi-Chianciano train station), you also have the option to rent a car there (Link: Chiusi car rental).
We recommend booking your car rental in advance to ensure availability and to take advantage of better rates. Most rental companies offer GPS options, which can be helpful for navigating rural roads. Or ensure you download offline maps in advance since internet connections can be spotty.
Please note: If you’re planning to rent a car, American travelers should be aware that an International Driver’s License is required (Link: IDP). This document serves as a translation of your U.S. driver’s license and is mandatory for driving legally in Italy. You can easily obtain one through AAA or similar organizations before your trip. Make sure to bring both your International Driver’s License and your valid U.S. driver’s license with you, as both are necessary when renting a car, or in the event of a roadside check.
Trains
Taking a train is another option to reach the La Foce area, offering a convenient alternative for travelers. Below are step-by-step instructions for reaching La Foce from both Rome and Florence:
From Rome to La Foce/lodging:
Step 1: Take the shuttle from Roma Fiumicino Airport to Roma Termini Station. Shuttles depart every 15 minutes, ensuring a quick transfer.
Step 2: Board a train from Roma Termini to Chiusi-Chianciano Station. This journey takes you through the Italian countryside. Tickets can be bought in advance online or on the station.
Step 3: From Chiusi-Chianciano Station, rent a car or take a taxi to your lodging.
Please note: Chiusi-Chianciano is a small station. Taxis cannot be reserved in advance, but are usually available outside the station. If you’re arriving after 9:00pm, please inform us ahead of time so transportation can be figured out as fewer taxis operate late in the evening.
From Florence to La Foce/lodging
Step 1: Take tram line T2 from Florence Airport to Santa Maria Novella Station, Florence’s main train station in the city center.
Step 2: From Santa Maria Novella, board a train to Chiusi-Chianciano Station.
Step 3: Rent a car or take a taxi from Chiusi-Chianciano Station to your lodging.
Please note: The same taxi guidelines for Chiusi-Chianciano Station apply as mentioned above.
